SAPEA aims to strengthen the links between European academies, and is offering a series of workshops to academies across Europe. These workshops are a unique opportunity to bring the academy community together and jointly identify ways of improving science advice practices.

On the occasion of the ALLEA General Assembly and the ENYA General Assembly, held on 22 May 2024, ALLEA and the Young Academies Science Advice Structure (YASAS) will be hosting two in-person workshops. Held back-to-back, these two workshops will be participatory and solutions-oriented, and are open to academy representatives involved in the management and development of their organisation (e.g. international relations, executive directors, or equivalent positions), and to fellows/members of the Young Academies.

The series of workshops will contribute to a report that will be published by SAPEA on interaction between academies and sharing practices in science advice.

9:00-12:00: Cooperation between academies in scientific advice

This workshop, hosted by ALLEA, will allow academies to exchange examples and experiences on how they collaborate bilaterally, nationally or internationally, to provide scientific advice. We will explore the diversity of collaborations, discuss concrete examples, and explore potential future partnerships.

13:00-16:00: Achieving diversity, inclusiveness and the involvement of early- and mid-career researchers in scientific advice

To better engage early- and mid-career researchers (EMCRs) in scientific advice, we invite academies to explore the processes of the Scientific Advice Mechanism in order to increase familiarity with it and to identify gaps for improvement.

In this interactive workshop, we will simulate the process of delivering a SAPEA evidence review report and gather ideas to make the process accessible, transparent and rewarding for EMCRs.

Travel expenses

In general, the academy or network that employs you is responsible for arranging and paying for your transport and accommodation for these meetings in Berlin. However, we understand that the financial situation of some academies would make it difficult or impossible for their staff to attend. For this reason, we have set aside some funds to help offset the costs of travel and/or accommodation for those academies. If you would like to apply for this financial assistance, please indicate this on the registration form.
