• Discussed the work on the ongoing scientific opinions; exchanged views on incoming and expected requests for scientific advice; and reflected on topics they may want to address in the future.
• Discussed the direct risks that predatory publishing is posing to academic integrity, data quality, etc and possible steps to raise awareness and take steps to counter this development.
• Discussed the typology of policy interventions that are at the disposal of the Group of Chief Scientific Advisors (GCSA). The discussion addressed questions as to how evidence-based science advice translates into actionable policies and how the GCSA's recommendations span legislative measures, strategic frameworks, governance structures, research investments, standards development, economic instruments, education initiatives, public engagement, international collaboration, monitoring systems, and equity considerations.  
• Exchanged information on ongoing and planned work on the topic of democracy and science with the European Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies (EGE) and discussed possible modus operandi for both advisory groups to work together.

The Advisors:

• Handed over the scientific opinion on advanced materials, together with the Evidence Review Report produced by the SAPEA consortium, to Ekaterina Zaharieva, European Commissioner for Startups, Research and Innovation.
• Participated in an expert workshop on Democracy and Science.
• Discussed the work on the ongoing scientific opinions; exchanged views on incoming and expected requests for scientific advice; and reflected on topics they may want to address in the future.
• Met with SAPEA representatives, Academies’ Presidents and the SAPEA board and exchanged information on progress of their ongoing work and plans for future work.
• Met with Markus Scheuren, Head of the Scientific Foresight Unit of the European Parliament’s research service, to exchange ideas on a possible cooperation with the Scientific Advice Mechanism.
• Discussed communication and outreach strategies.

The Advisors:

• Met with the Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies and reflected on upcoming opportunities for collaborative work of the two groups.
• Met with Joanna Drake, Deputy Director-General of DG RTD and exchanged views on the importance of the groups’ roles and work in the context of the current political priorities of the European Commission.

They exchanged information on progress of their ongoing work, brainstormed on various areas that SAPEA would like to address in the future such as potential players in demand for advice, communication strategy and potential topics for future work.
