SAPEA hosted a mini-symposium on framings of food and implications for policy, food security and sustainability.

The International Conference on Global Food Security.

The European Commission’s (EC) Scientific Advice Mechanism recently published an Evidence Review Report and a Scientific Opinion with policy recommendations that informed the new EC’s Farm to Fork Strategy of the European Green Deal. This mini-symposium proposes to focus on the question of framings of food, a fundamental starting point that lays the ground for the whole food system. The EC’s Group of Chief Scientific Advisors’ first and overarching policy recommendation is to “View food more as a common good and not just as a consumer good”. This recommendation is informed by SAPEA’s Evidence Review Report, which reviews the best up-to-date evidence on several theoretical perspectives and framings of food that have profound implications for the development of policy initiatives. It is therefore important that these framings are made explicit in debates about policy and practice relating to food.

Date and time: Friday 4th December, 16:30-18:00

  • Carina Keskitalo, member of the Group of Chief Scientific Advisors to the European Commission
