Several elements of the Commission’s strategies reflect the scientific advice of the Group of Chief Scientific Advisors in their Opinion “Successful and timely uptake of AI in science in the EU,” underpinned by SAPEA’s Evidence Review Report. These analyses highlighted how AI can transform scientific discovery and accelerate progress.

Key elements:

• Establish a European distributed institute for AI in science and a European AI in Science Council, to coordinate infrastructure, training and governance across disciplines.
• Ensure high-quality and fair access to data, computing and codes, supporting transparent, publicly accessible AI models that reinforce trust and reproducibility.
• Invest in AI tools tailored for scientific work, from foundation models to research assistants, and prioritise AI-powered research that benefits citizens in areas such as health and social cohesion.
• Promote a human- and community-centric approach to AI in science, embedding ethics, transparency and accountability, and building AI literacy to nurture and retain European talent.

These ideas are now being further developed through initiatives such as RAISE (the Resource for AI Science in Europe), the AI Observatory, and new EU funding opportunities.
