SAPEA Publishes Its Strategy on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

10 September 2026
Scientific advice is only as strong as the range of expertise behind it. Working groups that combine different disciplines, career stages, gender and geographical backgrounds draw on a broader evidence base, and leave fewer blind spots.

The SAPEA strategy explains how we embed equality, diversity and inclusion throughout our work, from nominating and selecting experts to working-group deliberations and communicating the results. With five interconnected objectives and ten shared principles of engagement, it applies across all our working groups, expert workshops, events and outreach activities.

SAPEA holds a webinar on its Strategy on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion on 5 October, 15:00–16:00 CEST, online. Jennifer McMahon, chair of the SAPEA EDI Working Group, will present the strategy and its five objectives, after introductory remarks from Mustafa Ozbilgin of Brunel University of London on the conditions for positive impact. A panel then brings together the Czech Academy of Sciences, the Global Young Academy, and the Royal Society to discuss good practices and challenges in embedding EDI in their institutions, followed by a Q&A. The webinar is aimed at Academy Networks representatives, Academy Presidents, and interested members and staff.
