Professor Penker focused her presentation on framings of food and how different framings of food (for instance as a commodity or a common good), lead to different policy interventions and, at the end of the day, to different sustainability outcomes. She stressed that policies need to concentrate more on framing food as a common good and as a human right in order to manage the transition towards a sustainable food system.
The hearing “Farm to Fork Strategy for a fair, healthy and environmentally friendly food system” gathered Members of the European Parliament from the Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI), and the Committee on Agriculture (AGRI), as well as academics, industry and NGO representatives. The two parliamentary committees are responsible for drafting a Motion for Resolution on the EU’s Farm to Fork Strategy, which will be later voted on by the entire European Parliament. Therefore, they are conducting hearings of scientists, professional interest organisations and other stakeholders, including the European Commission, on the role that the Farm to Fork Strategy will play, its outlook and the challenges it must tackle.
